Common problems with heaters: are you in need of a checkup?

Last winter, did it seem like your heating system wasn’t working as well as it did in years past? Did you see a spike in your monthly heating bills even though your system was running the same way as always? If so, your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system may be experiencing some minor problems that can be fixed with a little maintenance.

Well-maintained heaters are so important for your comfort, safety, and wallet. Regular maintenance might seem like a burden and something you can “put off” until a later date, but if you wait too long, the results can be costly.

If you’ve yet to get a heating system tune-up this year and have experienced any of the following problems, it’s time to call Van's One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning.

  • Expensive bills. It’s been said before, and it’ll be said again: an increase in your monthly bill is a sure-fire sign that something about your system is off, especially if your monthly usage hasn’t really changed. Is it possible that your utility company has increased your heating costs? Yes, but an equally-likely scenario is that something internal is causing the bulk of your problems. If your system isn’t running at an optimal level, then it needs to work harder to produce the results you’re used to seeing. And more work equals more money. It’s that simple.
  • Loud or strange noises. It is perfectly normal for a heater to make noises when it either begins or stops running; however, new sounds are a good indication that something is wrong. As a resident of the Green Bay, Wisconsin area, you’re most likely familiar with the sounds your heating system makes, seeing how they are often left running for months on end. If you hear anything out of the ordinary (such as squeaking or grinding), that means your system might have broken parts that need to be fixed before they cause further, or even permanent, damage.
  • Foul odors. When you start running your heating system, the smell of the air inside your house should not change. If it does, the odor could indicate that there are some internal issues with mold, mildew, drain clogging, or even the heater’s wiring. These issues are usually met with bad smells, so if the air starts to stink, it’s time to think (about calling Van's)!
  • Changes to your home’s temperatures. When you set the thermostat to a number, that number shouldn’t fluctuate while your system is running. Similarly, your house should not have hot and cold spots; the temperature throughout the building remain the same no matter where you go. If it isn’t, then that is a sign that either something is wrong with your thermostat or something is wrong with the system. Either way, the problem should be addressed before your HVAC system causes more costly issues.

Considering a professional tune-up before winter strikes – especially if you faced heater-related problems last year – is one of the best things you can do before the seasons change. By doing so, you could very well save yourself a boatload of trouble – and money – when the cold weather eventually hits Wisconsin.

And winter is indeed coming.

Why You Should Clean Your Air Ducts This Spring

Spring cleaning is the perfect time to get into all the nooks and crannies that you normally neglect in your regular cleaning routine. While you’re wiping down window frames and polishing the good silverware, add air duct cleaning to your spring cleaning checklist. To ensure maximum cooling efficiency and protect the health of everyone in your home, the air conditioning system should receive a good tune-up at least once a year, and preferably twice, before each heavy-use season. As long as you’re getting your system serviced, you may as well have your ducts cleaned at the same time!

Before and After Duct Cleaning | Van's One Hour

Improves Efficiency

The same dust that accumulates on your floors and furnishings circulates through the rest of your home’s air ducts. If there’s an unsightly layer of dirt in your home, your air conditioning system likely looks even worse. Ductwork and vents that have a heavy build-up of dust and debris can begin to restrict the flow of air into your living spaces. This means your system will have to work significantly harder to both cool and heat the space, resulting in more energy used and higher electric bills.

Clean systems operate at maximum efficiency, providing the most cost-effective performance and giving you the best bang for your buck. In-between thorough duct cleanings, be sure to regularly change your home’s air filters. Most professionals recommend you switch out the filter every other month, but homes with pets or other allergy concerns might need more frequent cleaning.

Reduces Allergy Symptoms

Air ducts that are left uncleansed can quickly spread harmful contaminants, pollutants and allergens throughout your home. Residents with chronic allergies or other respiratory problems are particularly sensitive to airborne debris, which can worsen their conditions and cause a number of uncomfortable symptoms. Even if no one in your household suffers from a respiratory condition, the same air pollutants can damage healthy lungs and lead to future medical complications. A clean air duct system is healthier for the entire household.

Air contaminants can also be the source of unpleasant smells throughout your home. Cleaning agents, mold, tobacco and even paint fumes can linger if your air system isn’t at its best. By regularly cleaning your air ducts, you can avoid having to deal with lingering odors.

My Furnace Isn’t Working!

My Furnace Isn’t Working!

Here’s a list of easy items to check to potentially save a service call

  1. Is there power to your thermostat? (See #4)
  2. Does your thermostat have new batteries (if present). If your thermostat’s batteries are expired this may cause the thermostat display to not work.
  3. Is the breaker to your furnace in the “On” position?
  4. Is the power switch to your furnace in the “On” position? The furnace in many cases will have an external power switch installed within a few feet of the furnace. In many cases this will also control power to the thermostat.
  5. Is your thermostat set to the correct setting (i.e. heat setting)? Each thermostat will have three settings, being “Off”, “Heat”, & “Cool”.

More Tips on Thermostat Use

  • If you are concerned about your Indoor Air Quality keeping your thermostat fan setting in the “On” position allows your furnace to constantly move air through out the home. This helps with forcing the air to pass through your filter or air cleaning system. By keeping your thermostat fan setting in the “On” mode you may experience cleaner air and can increase the usage of residual cooling and heating produced from each cycle.
  • Be aware if you do decide to keep your fan setting in the “On” position you will use more energy as a result. The good news for Variable speed and Modulating furnace owners is the financial impact should be minimal due to the electrical efficiency of these motors with properly designed ductwork.

If you are still having problems after going through these items call 866-573-8386 to set up a service call. Stay warm!
